While I try to buy from small businesses and locally as much as possible, I am not the best at it.
This period of self isolation has taught me how to think differently to support the little guy. The small businesses, shops, and farms that are part of my local community and beyond. They deserve a fighting chance at making it through this difficult time and I want to help as much as possible!
While there are still items that I have to resort to Amazon for due to availability and price, I’m happy to say that we have been supporting small local businesses more than ever before.
Summer is quickly approaching (although you wouldn’t know it with the cooler temps we are experiencing) and I am slowly stocking up on summer items. We recently bought a few items for Chris and myself from Brightside Boutique, I got Chris a birthday present (this is a great time to buy and hide for the holidays!) from Union Brewing Company and I’ve been eyeing a few items from Mint & Major.
Meats & Produce
Our local grocery stores have been hit or miss for staples that we like to keep in our home. Instead of going without, we’ve been placing orders for our local Farmers Market to pick up on Saturdays. They have been doing a tremendous job of enforcing social distancing practices and it’s so easy to walk in, grab your items (pre-paid online) and head out!
We have been disappointed in the produce available at our grocery store so we placed a Territory Grocery produce box order as well! For ~$30 we received 8+ pounds of fruit, vegetables and herbs. It was a nice change to create meals for the week around the items we received.
I am so excited that strawberry season is here and cannot wait to visit local farms for curbside strawberry pickup! I’m also keeping my eye out for farms who are offering socially distanced you pick strawberries!
I used to pick up a new candle or two every time I visited Marshalls because #cheap, but with stores being closed and in an effort to support local more we have been purchasing from Dawn’s Early Light Candles. The owners are parents of one of my good friends, live locally and the candles smell AMAZING! We are building a cart now with more to purchase since we’ve almost gone through our last order.
We’ve been lighting a candle at the end of each work day to serve as a subtle signal that the work day has ended and a relaxing evening has arrived. With no commute time it’s been hard to tell the difference between work and play without this simple act.
Since COVID-19 cases are still on the rise in our area we’ve made as many attempts as possible to not leave the house and be out amongst others. Instead of visiting our local liquor store we’ve been purchasing directly through the breweries in our area. Having beer delivered to our door is something I will miss when the world goes back to normal! Check out Bier Mi for a list of places delivering to your area!
