WE BOUGHT A HOUSE!!! I can’t believe I’m finally typing those words to share with all of you! It seems like a dream that Chris and I have had for so long and it finally happened! We both rented homes in Baltimore for sooooo long and dreamed of the day we’d be able to set up a backyard how we wanted and paint walls colors that we preferred. The day has finally come my friends.
But let me back up to how we got here. Chris and I were victims of a home invasion in August 2017. We were sleeping in our room when four young adults came in through an unlocked window (we had no idea it had been opened during a party a few weeks prior) and stole thousands of dollars of items from our first level. They were walking up the stairs to our bedroom when Cannoli heard them and started barking. Thank goodness for our little angel babe- I don’t like to think about what would have happened if he hadn’t heard them.
After that weekend we decided we couldn’t and wouldn’t risk raising a family in a city that we no longer felt safe in so we set alerts online and kept an eye out for jobs in three different cities. It took about a year before we were offered two incredible opportunities. So in July/August 2018 we both started new jobs in Washington DC and knew we would be moving sooner rather than later out of Baltimore. In fact we only made it a month- the 4+ hour commute every day was enough to make us jump ship quicker than expected. It was HARD. We love Baltimore and it truly holds a special place in our hearts. We just couldn’t LIVE in the city any longer.
We started renting a beautiful townhouse in Columbia and both wish that Columbia was a littttle closer to DC because we would have bought a house there if that was an option! We loved LIVING in Columbia, but wanted to be closer to DC for work and to play. Since we were driving to DC every day for work AND on the weekends to hang out with friends we made the decision to buy a home closer to DC and live in one of the suburbs around the city.
We started the house hunt officially in January and have seen about fifteen houses over the last three months. The process was daunting to say the least and we questioned ourselves more than once, but I’m proud to say that we ended up with the house we wanted and the house that felt like home the moment we stepped inside. When we were hunting for rental houses in Baltimore and Columbia- we knew each house was the one immediately upon walking in. It felt like home and we knew we’d have the same experience when looking for our forever home.
We put in an offer and because the market is SO STINKIN competitive right now, so did another couple. Their offer was selected and we were heartbroken. Fast forward two weeks later, we were touring houses and STILL thinking about the one we loved and after a particularly bad day of looking at houses we were discouraged and decided to take a week off. No more than ten minutes after we emailed our realtor to let him know we were taking a mental health break, we got an email from him stating that the other couple’s offer fell through and the house was ours if we wanted it.
So we thought about it for maybe two minutes and said YES. We moved in this past weekend and are already in love. Cannoli and Mar have a fenced in backyard to run around in, our commutes are drastically better and the house just FEELS good.
Things ALWAYS work out how they are supposed to even if we don’t see it in the moment. I’m so pleased to say that Chris and I have bought our dream house in a great neighborhood of Silver Spring and it might just be our forever home.
