Chris and I recently spent a long weekend with his parents in Dewey Beach. We stayed in the cutest little oceanside cottage that was tucked away from the street. The cute little patio in the front with tree coverage was the perfect place to relax after a long day in the sun on the beach. We had good food, good drinks, relaxing beach days and quality time together. This was my first extended stay in Dewey Beach and I loved it! So naturally I HAVE to share all of the reasons why you should visit as well!
I grew up in Delaware and have been visiting and working at the Delaware beaches for my entire life. The beaches are clean with sorted recycling cans and trash cans at every beach path. The sand is plowed every morning smoothing it out for the day and for a free beach I think it’s impressive at how beautiful the beaches are kept!
The rules changes frequently, but as of June 2019 you have to go to the municipal building to register your dog if you want to take them onto the beach. It was $5 for four days and we carried the registration slip with us whenever our dog was on the beach, but we were never questioned for it. Dogs are allowed on the beach prior to 9:30am and after 5:30pm. Be mindful if you are NOT a dog person that you may want to avoid those timeframes as well because the beach is flooded with dogs when they are allowed. As a dog lover and obsessive puppy Mama I had the BEST time playing with dogs and watching mine prance around the beach living his best life.
Delaware is a small state so it’s not a long distance from the Southernmost beach to the Northernmost. Fenwick Island, Bethany Beach, Dewey Beach, Rehoboth Beach, Lewes are all beautiful beaches and towns that I recommend visiting if you are in the area. They each offer something different so it’s easy to find a happy place for everyone!
Dewey Beach is known for the Rusty Rudder, Bottle & Cork, and Starboard. All are popular music destinations and host local as well as major mainstream bands. I also feel like there is a wide range of music at each destination. We spent some time at Jimmy’s Grille listening to live music and it was a great mix of country (my preference) and everything else (Chris’ preference) so we stayed for a while to enjoy the music!
Food + Drinks
I was sleeping on the foodie scene in Dewey Beach guys. I was super impressed with the restaurants that we visited and although we didn’t even begin to scratch the surface I can recommend the following based on personal experience.
Being in DC we are lucky because there are so many beach options available for us. Virginia Beach, New Jersey Beaches, Delaware and MD beaches are within reasonable distances for a long weekend or extended vacation. However, growing up in Delaware and spending so many summers working at Fenwick Island the Delaware beaches hold a special place in my heart and I encourage everyone to visit at least once. I’m sure you’ll love them just as much as I do!
