When Chris and I planned a trip to Orlando to visit friends, we did not expect to be there as a Hurricane approached. We should have known it was a possibility, but the thought did not cross our minds until we were heading to the airport on the Thursday before Labor Day and got an updated news report that Hurricane Dorian was expected to make landfall on Sunday, September 1st at 3pm. Our flight back to Baltimore/DC was the same day at 9am. We flew into Orlando not knowing if we’d fly home on Sunday, but determined to have a GREAT three days with our friends.
Thankfully, Dorian’s track shifted and we were able to enjoy our Labor Day Weekend visit with minimal rain and our return flight home was just fine. We had a great long weekend with friends and I want to do an old fashioned recap post about our trip. What we saw/did/ate during our three day visit!
Our flight arrived in Orlando at noon. It was a super smooth flight and we passed the two hour trip by watching Secret Life of Pets 2. Shoutout to an animated film about cute pets to keep me calm while we were up in the air (I am not a fan of flying). Chris’ childhood friend Josh picked us up from the airport and we drove to his house to pick up his wife Dani before enjoying a lunch of burgers and fries.
Josh & Dani live in a neighborhood that is built around a natural spring and marsh. It was STUNNING! It was mind boggling to think that people live so close to something so beautiful and can take advantage of the spring whenever they please! We spent much of the afternoon swimming in various bodies of water all within his neighborhood.
We went back to the house, got cleaned up and set off to Universal Studios City Walk for dinner and live music. We enjoyed Italian at Vivo Italian Kitchen and then went to an Irish pub for dueling pianos!
Chris woke up early to help Josh and his brother get sandbags in preparation of Hurricane Dorian. At this time, we still thought the Hurricane was going to make direct impact on Sunday so we were happy to help them prepare for the storm.
We enjoyed donuts and coffee before heading off on a street art excursion. My sweet husband had done some research (without me knowing) and had found a neighborhood with a ton of art for us to wander around. We lasted maybe an hour before hurrying to the car because we were melting in the hot Florida heat, but we found so many amazing walls!
Chris had also found a good lunch spot, Hunger Street Tacos! When he asked our host if he had eaten there before he learned that the owner of the restaurant was friends with Josh! It’s a small world even in Orlando Florida. We enjoyed authentic tacos and the breeze from their outdoor patio.
Friday ended with pizza at Josh’s parents’ home and hours of recounting old stories of Chris and Josh’s childhoods. It was so nice to be with people who have loved my husband for so many years and hear such wonderful stories of their friendship. We also chatted about the hurricane and I learned so much about Florida, how they prepare for hurricanes and how they deal with the aftermath. My fingers were crossed that it didn’t hit as hard as projected.
We spent a FULL day at Walt Disney World on Saturday which I will be recapping in another post so stay tuned! While we were at the park we learned of the shift in Hurricane Dorian’s path and were able to relax knowing that our flight for the following morning was fine. More about Disney in next week’s post!
It had been many years since I had last been in Orlando and it was so nice to travel with my favorite guy and catch up with some of his oldest friends. The trip gave me a great appreciation for how lucky I am to be his wife and get to call this sweet man mine.
